BISEXUAL RESOURCE CENTER LAUNCHES 8th ANNUAL BISEXUAL+ HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH TO CALL FOR BISEXUAL+ EQUITY

The annual #BiHealthMonth campaign will emphasize the need for bisexual+ equity in social, educational, and healthcare spaces.

Boston, MAThe Bisexual Resource Center (BRC), America’s oldest national bisexual organization, will celebrate the 8th annual Bisexual Health Awareness Month (#BiHealthMonth) social media campaign throughout March 2021.

#BiHealthMonth, founded and lead annually by the BRC, raises awareness about the bisexual+ (bi, pansexual, fluid, queer, etc.) community’s social, economic, and health disparities; advocates for resources; and inspires actions to improve bi+ people’s well-being. This year’s campaign will center on equity.  Equity is achieved when the unique needs of our diverse bi+ community have been met, and discrimination against BIPOC, transgender, and disabled members of the bi+ community has been eliminated. The bisexual+ community makes up the majority of the LGBTQ+ community and experiences significantly higher rates of physical, sexual, social, and emotional violence and disparities than gay and straight people, as well as worse physical, mental, and social health. These health disparities are even worse for bi+ people of color and trans people.

“Although bisexual+ people are the majority of the LGBTQ+ community, we don’t benefit from the same research, resources, or attention as our gay or straight peers,” said Belle Haggett Silverman, President of the Bisexual Resource Center. “At work, at school, and at the doctor’s office, our needs are often overlooked, creating serious challenges to our health and well-being. This year, #BiHealthMonth invites our supporters to help us build a healthier, happier, and more equitable future for everyone in our diverse bisexual+ community.”

Throughout the month of March, the BRC will partner with a diverse array of leading organizations, including #StillBisexual, AIDS United, American Psychological Association Bisexual Issues Committee Division 44: Society for the Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity, Athlete Ally, Bi+ Georgia, Bi+ Podcast, Bisexual Index UK, Bisexual Queer Alliance Chicago (BQAC), BiRequest, BiSocial Network, Bi Women Boston, CenterLink: the Community of LGBT Centers, Equality Florida, Family Equality Council, Fenway Health, Gender Stories, Human Rights Campaign (HRC), Keshet: For LGBTQ Equality in Jewish Life, LOCS Collective, Los Angeles Bi Task Force, Movement Advancement Project (MAP), NARAL, National Association of Social Workers – MA Chapter (NASW-MA), Open Door Health, PFLAG National, the Pride Study, SAGE, SpeakOUT Boston, the Ally Coalition, the Task Force, the Trevor Project; and more to feature engaging and informative content, events, research, resources, and actions. The BRC invites individuals, organizations, media outlets, companies, and more to participate all month long by posting online using #BiHealthMonth, hosting local community events, donating to the Bisexual Resource Center, and more.

#BiHealthMonth highlights will include an episode of the bi+plus podcast featuring a conversation with BRC board members Noël Schutz and Alexandra Bolles; new, original content from bi+ advocates; and a full calendar of BRC-hosted online events including a Bisexual Social and Support Group (BLiSS) meeting (March 3), Bisexual and Bi-Curious Men’s Group meeting (March 9), Bi+ Book Club meeting discussing Vera Kelly is Not a Mystery (March 10): Young BLiSS Social and Support Group (March 11), Bi/Pan+ Guyz Social Night (March 17), Biversity Brunch (March 20), and Tea with Bisexual Women Partnered with Men (BWPM) (March 21), and Biversity Brunch (March 21); as well as content collaborations and partner events.
